Kim Sunmi surprised by wheelchair fencing to gain medal

South Korean wheelchair fencer Kim Sunmi began her career at the age of 18. She became familiar with fencing after getting involved in a traffic accident when she was only 16.

“A fencing athlete acquainted me with this sport. We met at the hospital one day after I’d got in the car accident,” Kim, who is now 29, recalled.

“At first I was surprised and still had no knowledge of the presence of special sports for [disabled] people like me,” she said.

At the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Kim was able to contribute a bronze medal for South Korea. She secured the medal after she managed to enter the semifinal round of women’s fencing A category individual degen.
